Box Score 2 The Lancer Men's Hockey team earned a much needed home victory with a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night at Windsor Arena.
The Lancers started the game with a sense of urgency after falling 2-1 to the Gryphons on Friday night to open the weekend series.
Windsor's special teams would prove to be the difference on the night as Mark Thorburn opened the scoring late in the first period with a short-handed goal at the 16:45 mark for a 1-0 lead. For Thorburn, it was his fourth goal of the regular season.
The Lancers would add to their lead later in the second period as Scott Gillis accepted a pass from Matt McCready and Kyle Lang and chipped in his second goal in as many nights on a Lancer power play for a 2-0 advantage.
The game turned chippy in the final period as the team's combined for seven penalties and numerous man-advantage opportunities.
Guelph's Ed Gale brought the Gryphons to within one with less than two minutes to play, but it was not enough as the Lancers held on for the 2-1 victory
The line of Mark Thorburn, Brett Vandehogen and Brett Oliphant had a strong game as the Lancers outshot the opposition 38-28.
Jim Watt made 27 saves on the night, fourteen of which came in the third period to preserve the victory.
The Lancers will host the Ryerson Rams on Alumni Weekend next Friday night and Saturday afternoon in a two-day doubleheader.
Saturday afternoon's game is also Lancer Men's Hockey Fan Fest where fans will have an opportunity to participate in carnival games, win lots of prizes and giveaways and meet the team for an autograph session following the game.
Admission is free to everyone that day, so fans are encouraged to bring their friends and family for a fun family filled day at the Barn.
Game time on Friday night is set for 7:30pm, while puck-drop on Saturday will be at 2pm for Fan Fest.
