The Lancer Football team is looking to keep the ball rolling this week against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. After starting the season with a victory against York, the Lancers will be looking for a second straight victory on Saturday.
The home opener against Toronto is set for Saturday night at 7pm at University of Windsor Stadium.
For the Varsity Blues, they are coming off of a tough first week after suffering a 36-0 loss to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
Last Monday, the Lancers started the season off on the right foot as they earned a 17-14 road victory against the York Lions in the annual Labour Day clash.
Windsor get off to a quick start against their opponents with a field goal from kicker
Joe Colella. That score was quickly followed up by a 26 yard touchdown that saw quarterback
Sam Malian hook up with receiver
Mike Harrington to put the Lancers up by 10 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lions came out hungry and forced a fumble to cut the Lancers lead to 3. The next two quarters saw the teams trade touchdowns with the Lancer points coming off of an interception by linebacker
John Celestino.
A late fourth quarter punt return saw the Lions cut the lead to 17-14, but it would not be enough to complete the comeback.
Second year quarterback Malian threw for 134 yards and one touchdown to lead the Lancers. The tandem of
Kamar Anglin and
Cody Butler combined for 20 carries and 118 yards.
This weekend, Windsor will be looking for a repeat of their success from last season against the Varsity Blues. Last fall, Windsor got a four touchdown performance from quarterback Sam Malian as he led the Lancers to a 38-14 victory.
This Saturday, if the Lancers are going to make it two consecutive wins against Toronto, they are going to have to take advantage of a Toronto defence that allowed 538 yards in week one.
Defensively, they'll also have to keep an eye on Toronto receiver Jonathan Wright who sprang for 65 yards on only 3 catches against Laurier. An aggressive defensive effort with pressure placed on the opposing quarterback will be necessary if the Lancers want to continue their winning ways.
Kick-off is set for 7:00pm on Saturday night on Alumni Field at the University of Windsor Stadium.
Tickets are available at the gates and are $8 general admission for adults, $5 for students/seniors, and $12 for premium gold seating.
