Lancer Football set to face Mustangs in OUA semi-finals

The No. 6 nationally ranked Windsor Lancers football team will visit London on Saturday, November 7 as they battle the No. 7 nationally ranked Western Mustangs in an OUA semi-final matchup at 1:00 p.m.

The 7-2 Lancers, the No. 2 OUA team in the latest U SPORTS rankings, defeated the Guelph Gryphons 28-24 at Alumni Stadium on Saturday to secure their third provincial semi-final appearance in the last four seasons. In the win, on top of his team-leading fifth rushing touchdown in 2026, Faculty of Human Kinetics graduate student Kareame Cotton Jr. threw his U SPORTS-leading 27th and 28th passing touchdowns of the year, while fellow kinesiology major Evan Martin caught the 20-yard, game-clinching score with roughly five minutes left.

"It's a credit to the work ethic and the determination he has," head coach Jean-Paul Circelli said regarding his quarterback's record-breaking season. "He attended additional clinics, met with the coaching staff, and learned the offence during the offseason to make the transition from receiver to the hardest position in sports full-time at this level."

"When people say they want to make a positional switch, they usually don't follow through, but Kareame looked great in the spring and ran with the role," he added. "His play has ignited our offence and allowed a lot of our playmakers to be highlighted."

Beyond Cotton and Martin, someone who will look to build on a memorable year even more this week is hometown wide receiver Colby Ginn, a player who set the Lancers' single-season touchdown record (10) during the regular season and had a 69-yard score of his own against Western at home on September 12.

"Colby Ginn is very special because of his stature," Circelli said. "A lot of people look past him because he's not 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4, but he might have the best catch radius in the entire league. I expect him to be the leader at his position once again."

"Anytime you can develop local talent, I think it sends a message to the rest of the community that you can stay home and do some great things," he added. "That was shown with what Devin Veresuk did a couple of years ago, and Colby's no different. It sets the table for people to know that if you put the work in and are surrounded by some other good players, you can highlight an exceptional career, and that's what he's done."

The 7-2 Mustangs, meanwhile, are the No. 3 OUA team in the latest U SPORTS rankings and defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 58-41 in their quarter-final contest. Fourth-year running back Ethan Dolby has been at the focal point of a season where they've led U SPORTS in points per game with 47.56, leading the country in rushing yards (999) while being tied for first in the OUA for rushing touchdowns (7), a feat he shares with Western QB Jerome Rancourt. Lancer running back Weagbe Mombo, a Toronto Argonauts (CFL) draft pick with 397 yards and two touchdowns in his last three games, will be Windsor's best rushing option to counter the Mustangs' explosive ground game.

"They lost two great offensive linemen in the offseason, but it hasn't mattered because they're an offensive line factory," Circelli said regarding Western's ground game. "Both Dolby and Jack Kelly are exceptional backs, too, but what makes Dolby so difficult to bring down is his ability to make one cut and explode into the gap."

"A lot of people saw how big an X factor he was when Laurier was here," Circelli added regarding his superstar running back. "When he's going, he's as good as there is, and having him back now makes a big difference with Tyson Noel Charles and Andrew Delaney."

Saturday's hosts have also received critical contributions from sophomore Emmett Charles, Windsor native Cyrus McGarrell, and true freshmen linebackers Nathan Summers and Dylan Tharby. Charles, for example, has carved out a regular role at receiver by leading the nation in touchdowns (12), highlighted by two three-score outings (vs McMaster and at Ottawa); McGarrell, in addition to Tharby's team-leading 31 total tackles, finished the regular season as Western's interception leader (3), one of which came against the 7-1 Queen's Gales, the reigning Yates Cup winners.

"If we don't score, it will be very difficult to stop the offensive machine they have," Circelli believes. "Laurier did it a few weeks ago, but there aren't too many teams that have grounded them to a halt."

"I foresee the defensive line being the biggest X factor in the game for us," he added. "Ahmad Taylor is the most complete defensive end in the country, while Braxton Johnson and Melyk George keep our linebackers clean. This type of game is also perfect for the style Derek Anderson plays."

With an OUA-best six-game winning streak and a passionate fan base being their biggest sources of inspiration, on top of a blue collar and gold swagger, the Lancers are finally ready to beat Western for the first time since 2003 and appear in their first Yates Cup game since winning it against Laurier on November 8, 1975 under legendary coach Gino Fracas.

"This is the most talented team we've had since that group was assembled, and to have an opportunity to go to our first Yates Cup in 51 years means a lot because it would do wonders for what we're doing here," Circelli said. "If it's a close game, we feel we'll come out on top because our guys are mentally tough and know exactly what to do when people are getting nervous and having anxiety. They thrive in that situation."

"We need our fans in London to be as loud as possible, and there's no reason why we can't have more people than them in the crowd on Saturday," he concluded.
