The No. 5 Windsor Lancer football program will host its fifth home playoff game in four years on Saturday, October 31st at 1:00 p.m. as the Guelph Gryphons arrive for an OUA quarter-final matchup.
Â
Windsor, sitting fourth in the conference, completed its regular season last weekend as the hottest team across the province, riding a five-game winning streak to a 6-2 record; Guelph, meanwhile, finished fifth with a 4-4 record.
Â
For the blue and gold, their bread and butter this year has been the big-play connection between quarterback
Kareame Cotton and wide receiver
Colby Ginn. The two of them alone have connected on plays of 82 (at Queen's), 75 (at McMaster), and 69 yards (vs Western), while running backs
Weagbe Mombo and
Tyson Noel Charles have scored touchdowns on plays of 82, 75, and 69 yards of their own through the ground game (all three versus Laurier).Â
Â
During their five-game winning streak, the Lancers have also formed a brick wall defensively, averaging just 13 points against per game. In their two latest wins (at Queen's and Guelph), for example, they generated five interceptions and three sacks while allowing only two passing scores. Linebacker
Derek Anderson, an Odette School of Business student, drove these two victories, posting 11 total tackles, three interceptions, and a touchdown en route to a BioSteel Performer of the Week honour.
Â
For the visiting Gryphons, they have won four of their last six games and will look to be on the right side of a one-score game after losing their final two regular season games by five combined points (at Queen's by one and vs Windsor by four). At full strength, though, their offence is among the best in Ontario, averaging 46 points per win while also scoring 41 points at Queen's, the #1 OUA school in the latest U SPORTS rankings.
Â
Much like Windsor, Guelph's offence is led by their quarterback as fourth-year option Tristan Aboud has scored 17 passing touchdowns (T-2nd in the OUA) and 312 passing yards per game (3rd in the OUA); furthermore, their 179.8 rushing yards per game have allowed them to control the ball for huge chunks of time and wear down opposing defences.
Â
Three areas the Lancers must monitor throughout the game on Saturday include Guelph's ability to stay disciplined, rush the quarterback, and convert field goals; for example, through eight games, the Gryphons have committed 68 penalties, generated just ten sacks, and have only converted 70% of their field goals. If this matchup is again decided by seven or fewer points, every snap in the second half will amplify ten-fold–and the price of one mistake could be season-altering.
