The Lancer Football program kicked off the 2009 OUA Football season with a 17-14 win on the road over the York University Lions on Labour Day Monday in Toronto.
With the victory, the Lancers move to 1-0 on the season and now head home for the home opener on Saturday night against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Kick-off is set for 7pm on Saturday at Alumni Field.
On Monday, Windsor kicker Joe Colella opened the scoring five minutes into the contest with a 37 yard field goal to put Windsor ahead 3-0.
Five minutes later, the Lancers would add to their lead as
Mike Harrington caught a 26 yard pass from quarterback
Sam Malian to put Windsor up 10-0 heading into the second quarter.
York did the only scoring in the second quarter as Anthony Tombler recovered a fumble for a touchdown to narrow the Lancer lead to 10-7 after the first half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Windsor linebacker
John Celestino intercepted a York pass and ran 70 yards for a touchdown, putting Windsor up 17-7 with under nine minutes to play.
York answered with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter for the final scoring play of the game as the Lancers held on for the 17-14 victory.
For Windsor, quarterback
Sam Malian finished the game 13 of 28 passing for 134 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Running back
Kamar Anglin had a strong start to his CIS career as he carried the ball 10 times for 65 rushing yards.
Cody Butler added 53 yards on the ground while also carrying the ball 10 times.
Through the air,
Mike Harrington caught 4 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown while
Jordan Brescacin added 5 catches for 39 yards..
The Lancers will next take to the field for their home opener on Saturday September 12th at 7:00pm against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Alumni Field.
The game preceeds the highly anticipated
"Battle at the Bridge" between the Lancers and their arch rivals the Western Mustangs. The two will face off in the highlight event of the Lancers' Alumni Weekend, September 19th at 7:00pm at the University of Windsor Stadium.
