Women's Hockey splits series with Western with shoot-out win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
This past weekend, the Lancer women's hockey team split a weekend home and home series with the Western Mustangs.

The Lancers started the weekend out in London, falling 5-3 to the host Mustangs, but came from behind on Sunday to defeat the visiting Mustangs 3-2 in a shootout.

On Saturday in London, Windsor got on the board first as leading offensive threat Manon Davis lifted a backhander over a grounded Western goaltender Lindsey Martin on the power play to strike first.

In the early stages of the second, the province's top power play struck again with Candace Rapchack beating Martin down the right wing on a low wrist shot for her second goal of the season.

The Mustangs would then retaliate with five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with five minutes remaining in the game.

Kelly Calhoun scored her third goal of the season to bring Windsor within two, but they were unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities.

Lancer goaltender Jamie Tessier made 16 saves for the Lancers.

Back in Windsor on Sunday, the Lancers found themselves in a 2-0 deficit to the Mustangs after two periods of play.

Windsor got on the board early in the final period when Ashley Kirby accepted a pass from Casandra Meloche and Stephanie Hebert for her second of the season.

Jackie Leavoy tied it up for Windsor just past the halfway point of the third period. Both teams played hard for the remainder of regulation and through 5 minutes of overtime, but were unable to grab the win, sending the game into a shootout.

Deadlocked 1-1 after three shooters, Candace Rapchak snapped one past the Western goaltender in sudden death to give the Lancers the win.

Windsor is at home next weekend for a pair of games against the Brock Badgers and Guelph Gryphons. Both games are at 4:10pm at South Windsor Arena, as they take on Brock on Saturday and Guelph on Sunday.
