The Lancer Football team is ready to kick-off their 2010 OUA season tomorrow night as they battle the Ottawa Gee Gees on Alumni Field. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
The Lancers are eager for a fresh start to the year, as this is the first time in five years that the Lancers have not opened up their season against the Toronto Varsity Blues or York Lions.
A year ago, Coach Morencie's squad ended their 2009 season against the Gee Gees in a 24-9 loss in Ottawa.
All eyes will be on third year quarterback Sam Malian this season as he returns in top form after an injury ridden sophomore campaign. The native of LaSalle, Ontario had a strong off-season, working with strength and conditioning Frank Jeney to ensure he remains in top shape during the 2010 campaign.
Offensively, the Lancers will look to move the ball on the ground, with a strong running back core led by seniors Paul Lefaive and Derek Hymers. Both will look to build on strong 2009 campaigns which saw them rush for a combined 442 yards in 12 games.
Cory Fernandes will lead a veteran pack of receivers alongside third year standout Jordan Brescacin. These two speedy receivers will be looked to heavily throughout the season for the deep ball. Brescacin will look to rekindle the magic between himself and Malian from the 2008 season which saw the 6'4 Tecumseh native spring for 263 yards and one touchdown.
The defense is an extremely strong group, with the secondary being in excellent form," commented Morencie. "These guys have a wealth of experience behind them, and that's going to translate on the field."
Making an impact on the defensive line will be Seamus Postuma who is back for a third season, and linebacker Chris Arquette who is back for his fourth year in the blue and gold. Rookie linebacker Stephon Miller had an excellent camp and will be looking to secure an everyday role as a starter.
Tickets are still available for Tuesday's game and can be purchased at the gate. Doors open at 5:30pm. Season ticket packages can also be purchased at the ticket booth.
Following Tuesday's match-up against Ottawa, the Lancers will hit the road for the following two weeks as they are set to face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Monday, September 6th at 7pm in Toronto
Fans will also have Saturday, September 18th circled on their calendars as the Lancers will host their arch rivals, the Western Mustangs in their second home game of the season at 7pm.
