Lancer Football drops 40-7 decision to Vanier Cup Champion Gaels

Box Score
The Lancer Football team dropped a 40-7 decision to the defending Vanier Cup Champion Queen's Gaels on Sunday afternoon in Kingston.

Windsor now sits at 1-2 on the season after falling to the Gaels on the road in front of 5,427 fans at Richardson Stadium.

The Lancers played without starting quarterback Sam Malian, who didn't make the trip due to concussion concerns from the week prior.

On Sunday, Queen's Jimmy Therrien opened the scoring with an 11-yard scoring run to give the Gaels an early 7-0 lead.

After a Queen's fumble inside their own 30 yard line, the Lancers were able to take advantage and tie the game when rookie quarterback Austin Kennedy connected with Nick Baldassi for a 25 yard touchdown pass to even the game at 7-7.

For Kennedy, a local product who led the Essex Ravens to an OVFL title over summer, it was his first career OUA touchdown pass.

Queen's closed the quarter by adding 20 points on two touchdowns, a punt single, a field goal and a safety to make the score 27-7 at the half.

The Lancers struggled to run the ball against the Gaels, as they accumulated only 37 yards on the ground throughout the game.

"Our inability to run the ball has been killing us," commented Lancer Head Coach Mike Morencie.

Kennedy's play was a highlight for Windsor as the quarterback finished the game 15 of 24 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Matt Bucknor and Brad Adams each contributed two solo tackles and seven assisted tackles on the day.

The Lancers will now prepare to face their 401 rivals, the Western Mustangs, on Saturday September 18th. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm at Alumni Field.
