Men's Soccer draws tie against UOIT; falls to York

In their opening weekend at home, the Lancer Men's Soccer team dropped a decision to the visiting York Lions before coming back to earn a draw against the UOIT Ridgebacks.

Windsor is now 1-1-2 heading into Wednesday's match-up against Western.

On Saturday against York, the Lions scored two quick goals in the pouring rain to go up by two early in the first half. York's Jamall Smith put the Lions on the board first with a goal off a corner kick, while Alon Badat dribbled through two Lancer defenders to put one past Lancer goaltender Dan Mendonca nineteen minutes into the game.

The Lions were awarded a penalty kick at the fifty-five minute mark after a questionable foul and takedown in the box. Adrian Pena took the shot, and put York up by three.

The Lancers continued to struggle against York's strong ball control in the second half, allowing four more goals over the final thirty-five minutes of play.

Windsor had a couple chances to get on the board, however a aggressive York keeper and strong defense allowed for a minimal amount of shots for the Lancers.

Lancer goaltender Dan Mendonca made 10 saves in the game.

In their second game of the weekend, the Lancers faced the newly formed UOIT Ridgebacks, who joined the OUA soccer league this season. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw.

Midway through the first half Lancer defender Chris Gregg has a very long throw in that reached UOIT goaltender Andrew Thompson. Thompson bobbled the throw in, allowing the rebound which Lancer midfielder Michael Watson pounded into the net to put Windsor up 1-0.

Nine minutes into the second half, UOIT put one past Mendonca to tie the game up at one. The Ridgebacks capitalized on a corner kick as Windsor failed to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box. UOIT's Daniel Henao fired a shot from the top of the box and scored in the bottom left corner.

Possession was pretty even throughout the game, however UOIT had a much stronger second half allowing them to tie the game up and put additional pressure on the Lancer's keeper.
Windsor striker Ryan Wise also had a couple nice chances to take the lead however were unable to capitalize.

Windsor and UOIT's goal keepers each made 8 saves in the draw.

The Lancers will now face the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night at 7:30pm on Alumni Field.
