The Lancer women's volleyball team defeated the Rochester University at the Julie Martin Invitational, hosted by Madonna University, this past weekend in Livonia, Michigan.
The team looked exceptionally promising as returning athletes Kaila Seguin, Michelle Pierce and Ana Vrcelj began elevating their game to the next level. All athletes are currently seeing the floor as the coaching staff looks to finalize the 2010-11 roster, with new prospect Brianna Balzer looking promising for a spot on the squad.
In game one of a four tournament weekend, the Lancers were edged out in a 3 set match to University Michigan-Dearborn 23-25, 21-25, 29-31.
At this early stage in the season the Lancers struggled to contend with the speed of attack from Davenport, who Windsor faced in game two of their exhibition season. Davenport controlled the play in all three sets, while the Lancers struggled to deal with ball control and offensive execution at the net and ended the match in three straight sets, 16-25, 16-25, and 20-25.
Lancers were dominated by Madonna University Crusaders on Saturday in a 3 set match with scores of 11-25, 12-25, and 17-25. The Lancers showed moments of precise execution and will be challenged in the coming games to use the ability to take the 'moments' to a heightened level of consistency.
Building on our first games of the season the previous day, the Lancers were able to put together a much improved performance in their final contest against Rochester. The Lancers defeated Rochester 3-1 with set scores of 16-25, 15-25, 16-25, 26-24.
Michelle Pierce was dominant in the middle with .500 attack efficiency contributing 11 kills; while 3rd year Vrcelj contributed a .286 attack efficiency and 2nd year Kaila Seguin also contributing with a .273 attack efficiency.
The next action for the Lancers is the University of Montreal Carabins Invitational Tournament in Montreal on Sept. 17-19th.
