Women's Volleyball falls to Lakehead in strong defensive effort

Box Score
Despite playing their most impressive defensive game of the season, the Lancers women's volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-9, 21-25, 25-20, 24-26, 13-15) Saturday night at the St. Denis Centre.

The first set saw plenty of action with long rallies and impressive play on both sides of the net. The hot Lancer defence, lead by Michelle Pierce, combined with great passing by Jillian Fantuz and hitting from Ana Vrcelj (4 kills) and Kaila Seguin (3 kills) allowed them to lead by 9 points or more for a majority of the set. The Lancers had 5 straight points at the end of the set, finishing it 25-9 with a team block.

In set two the Thunderwolves took their first lead of the match and the first technical time out. At 9-9 the Lancers were able to catch up, and take a brief lead but weren't able to hold on and found themselves down late in the set. A time out by the Lancers gave the girls what they needed to close in on their opponent, but it wasn't enough and the Thunderwolves took the second set 25-21.

Windsor moved quickly in the third set, taking both technical's with ease. At 20-11 the Thunderwolves challenged the Lancers dominance going 6 straight and decreasing the Lancers' lead to 4. The Lancers were able to battle back and finished the third set with a 25-20 win.

Despite being ready to take it in the fourth set, the Lancers were put to the test by trick plays from the Thunderwolves' offence. The teams split the technical's and had a back and forth battle to the end of the game. Lakehead finished the set 26-24.

The Thunderwolves' defence and hitting from #6, Vanessa Chorkawy, gave the Lancers a challenge in the final set. After tying it at 6-6, the Lancers pulled ahead and took the first technical. From there, the two teams were locked into a back and forth game. After some hard fought rallies, Thunderwolves took a 15-13 victory.

The Lancer defence had an impressive game with a total of 18 team blocks. Michelle Pierce lead the team with 7 kills, 2 ace serves, 11 digs and 4 blocks. Kaila Seguin had 15 kills, Ana Vercelj 9 kills and Brianna Balzar 7 kills.

The Lancers will host the Waterloo Warriors February 4th at 6pm at the St. Denis Centre.
