Lancer women's hockey earns 3-1 win over Badgers Saturday afternoon

Box Score
The Lancer women's hockey team are one step closer to hosting a home playoff game with a 3-1 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon in Windsor.

The Lancers currently sit in fifth place in the OUA standings, just one point behind the Queen's Gaels in fourth place.

With a Lancer win over Guelph in their final regular season game Sunday (4:10pm, South Windsor Arena), and a loss by Queen's to the York Lions, the Lancers would finish fourth overall and host a round one match next weekend.

After a tight first two periods, that saw some excellent goaltender from Windsor's Jamie Tessier and Brock's Beth Clause, the score remained deadlocked at zero.

Windsor opened up the scoring early in the third as Candace Chevalier netted her tenth of the season on a pass from Jenny MacKnight and Candace Rapchak, to put Windsor up by one just three minutes into the period.

Fourth year forward Manon Davis increased Windsor's lead to two on a power play goal ten minutes later. Adalena Tridico and Courtney Spoors assisted on the goal.

With just 56 seconds remaining in regulation, the Badgers spoiled Tessier's shut out with a goal from Leigh Vanderveen.

With under a minute left on the clock, the Badgers pull Clause on the very next face-off to give them the man advantage in their attempt to tie the game.

Off the face-off, an excellent defensive move by Chevalier puts a Badger out of play that allows Tridico to accept at pass from Rapchak and shoot the puck all the way down the ice into the empty net, securing the win.

Windsor closes out the regular season on Sunday afternoon at 4:10pm when they host Guelph at South Windsor Arena. The Lancers will also honour their graduating athletes in a pre-game ceremony.
