The No. 10 nationally ranked Windsor Lancer women's hockey team is set to open up the first round of the playoffs this weekend as they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels in a highly anticipated OUA quarterfinal matchup.
The Blue & Gold are looking to rebound after a tough 5-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on the weekend to close out the regular season.
The 15-11-1 Lancers hope to better their performance from last year which saw them get knocked out in the second round. After knocking off the York Lions with a 3-2 double overtime win, Coach Hunter's squad dropped to game to the eventual OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks.
The 2010-11 version of the Lancers look poised to make a deep run this year. After starting off the season with a six game winning streak, the Lancers maintained their position in the CIS top ten all season.
With the additions of nine rookies, including OUA all-rookie team members
Courtney Spoors and
Adalena Tridico, the Blue & Gold have a much deeper offense this season and with the strong goaltending provided by net minder
Jamie Tessier, the Lancers have a chance to win every night.
Spoors and fellow rookie,
Candace Kourounis finished third and fourth respectively in rookie scoring this season, and will look to make an impact in their first OUA playoff game.
The Lancers and the Gaels both finished the regular season with 15 wins, however Queen's edged Windsor by three points to clinch the fourth spot in the OUA conference.
Windsor got the better of Queen's in the regular season meetings between the two teams, winning two of the three matchups. The two Lancer wins came on home ice as they dropped the Gaels 1-0, and 5-3.
The puck is set to drop on Saturday night at 8:30pm in Kingston.
