Men's Soccer opens season with a pair of road losses

The Lancer men's soccer team opened up the 2011 regular season with a pair of road losses to the McMaster Marauders and Brock Badgers.

On Saturday, the Blue & Gold fell in their season opener to the Marauders 2-1 in Hamilton.

In the first half of the match, both teams competed for that all important first goal, yet were unable to capitalize on any opportunities. The Lancer defence continued to shut down Marauder forward Mark Reilly, while the McMaster defence took possession in the back field. Minimal opportunities arose for either team in the first while the goal keepers had yet to be tested.

Six minutes into the second half, the scoring was finally opened as Lancer Michael Pio put the ball in the back of the net in a scramble in the box giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

The Marauders pushed back hard after the first goal of the match and in the 53rd minute responded with a goal of their own.

All tied up at one, both teams continued to take possession back and forth looking for the winning shot. In the 59th minute, less than ten minutes after the first goal of the match was scored, the Marauders scored on Lancer goaltender Dan Mendonca with a header off a McMaster corner kick.

Windsor would do their best to put on the pressure to tie the score up was unable to seize the opportunity.

On Sunday, the Lancers were shut out by the host Badgers 2-0.

Brock took a 1-0 lead, 31 minutes into the contest, when Eric Van Wissen headed in a corner kick from freshman Marcus Bernard.

Minutes later, Badger's Kosta Krajisnik rung a shot off the crossbar that kicked down to the goal line, but Lancers goalkeeper, Dejo Olagbegi made a great save to keep the ball out.

In the 47th minute, Brock shot the ball into the back of the net to give the Badgers a two-goal lead.

In the final fifteen minutes, the Lancers continued to press. Renalto Galvsic had an opportunity to make it a one goal game on a breakaway, but put the ball wide left. Mike Watson then had a goal called back, for being offside in the final five minutes.

Olagbegi finished with five saves in the loss for Windsor.

Next up, the Lancers will host the Waterloo Warriors this Saturday, September 10th , and the Laurier Golden Hawks this Sunday, September 11th. Both games are slated for 3:15pm on Alumni Field.
