Men's Soccer has strong weekend against York and Guelph

The Lancer men's soccer team played two strong games over the weekend, shutting out the Guelph Gryphons 1-0 before falling 3-2 to York on Sunday afternoon.

The Lancers had an even first half against the Gryphons. With the rain stopping for the afternoon, both teams had an even match with the ball on either side of the field for equal amounts of time.

Lancers goalie Dejo Olabegi kept the Lancers going by making some excellent saves. An injury for Guelph's Mohammad-Ali Heydarpour put the game to a halt momentarily, but the momentum quickly picked up, ending the first half of the match 0-0.

The second half of the game started off much like the first with both teams putting in amazing effort to keep the ball alive. With other small injuries from both teams, the game was intensified by the minute.

Eric Cirovski finally gave the Lancers the goal they needed, capitalizing on a beautiful pass by Joe Comaj with only seven minutes left in the game.

Olabegi and the Lancer defense held off the Gryphons for the final minutes to take home the win.

The Lancer men started off slow on Sunday afternoon against the undefeated York Lions. With a quick and easy goal from York's Adrian Pena in the 9th minute of the first half, the Lancers received a rude awakening and stepped up their game for the remaining 36 minutes.

The Lions held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half of the game was exciting and intense, and the momentum picked up when Windsor's Joe Comaj headed the ball in the net at the 50th minute.

Quickly a second goal for Pena was returned in a free kick, making the score 2-1 York.

Then in the 66th minute of the game, Christian Mayorga sent a rocket of a kick in the net making the score come to a tie at 2-2.

York's Daniel Alonzi scored the third and final goal for the Lions, again off a free kick. With the Lancers giving it all they got and many close chances at the York net, no one was able to score a goal to tie the game.

Windsor will look for revenge next Sunday when the two teams face off again, this time on York's home field. Windsor will also play the Gryphons on Saturday on the road.
