Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- First-team all-Canadian
Jordan Brescacin picked up a game-high 209 yards and two majors, including the game-winning 55-yard touchdown reception at the 9:06 mark of the fourth quarter, as the Windsor Lancers survived a scare from the York Lions with a 26-22 victory at Alumni Field on Saturday night.
Austin Kennedy (Windsor) threw for 390 yards and three touchdowns while
Brad Adams led the way on defense, tallying 9 tackles on the night.
York pivot Myles Gibbon garnered 293 yards in the air as well as a touchdown, and William Austin notched 100 yards on the ground for the Lions (1-4) in a losing cause.
The Lancers (3-2) drew first blood early in the opening quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brescacin.
However, the Lions picked things up defensively, and would take a slight lead after quarterback Myles Gibbon found Jonelle Tolbert for a 32-yard reception. The visitors extended their lead at the beginning of the second period with a field goal, and the Lancers struggled through the next few minutes to gain the momentum.
However, a crucial interception by
John Moynahan turned the tide of the first half back in favour of Windsor. His pick gave the Lancers possession deep in Lions territory, and Kennedy capitalized with a 16-yard TD pass to
Kyle Tyo. Windsor held a 15-11 lead going into the half.
After the Lions re-took the lead midway through the third quarter on a Kyle Exume rushing major,
Dan Cerino leveled the match at 19-19 with a 27-yard field goal. After Brescacin's game-breaker with under 10 minutes to go in the contest, the Lions sliced into the advantage with three more points from kicker Heneri Dervishi.
Windsor's slim lead looked to be in danger late in the contest as the Lions moved the ball down the field. However, Lancer DB
Udoka Nwaesei helped secure the victory with his second interception of the game that thwarted York's drive.
From there, the Lancers re-gained possession and were able to run down the clock to clinch their third victory of the season.
The Lancers will play their final home game next Saturday, October 6 when they host the Queen's Gaels at Alumni Field. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
