Box Score 2 The Lancer women's hockey team earned a point in a 2-1 shoot-out loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon, and followed that up with a dominating 6-2 win over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday at South Windsor Arena.
The three points puts Windsor in sixth place in the standings, just one point shy of the Varsity Blues.
After a scoreless first period Saturday, Varsity Blues captain Kelly O'Hanlon got the Blues on the board with an unassisted tally, her second shorthanded marker of the season. U of T carried the one-goal lead into the third period.
Windsor's
Ally Strickland evened the score with 7:48 remaining in regulation time. The Lancers dominated the overtime period, registering five shots on Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris to Toronto's none.
Lancer forward
Jenny MacKnight and Blue Courtney Tougas each scored as the game remained deadlocked after the first three shooters. Brittany Kirby scored as U of T's fourth shooter and Kesteris denied Windsor's
Candace Kourounis to seal the win.
On Sunday, Ryerson`s Samantha Pui surprised the Lancer defense and goaltender
Karlyle Robinson right off the opening face-off, as she put the visiting Rams on the board just 0:26 into the game.
The Lancers responded with two unanswered goals to close out the first period with a 2-1 lead.
Lindsay Hoogstraten tied it up at one at 6:14 of the period, before newcomer
Erinn Noseworthy scored her first OUA career goal at 15:26 to give Windsor the lead.
Windsor held the one goal lead for most of the middle period before Emily Rose Galliani Pecchia tied the game at two at 15:37 of the period. Windsor`s
Jenny MacKnight scored oen minute later to restore the Lancer lead heading into the third period.
In the third, the Lancers had three straight goals from
Courtney Spoors,
Emily Deane (her first of the year), and
Ally Strickland to secure the victory.
Windsor will return home for their final regular season game on Saturday when they take on the Queen`s Gaels at 4:10pm. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and commemorative t-shirts will be available for sale at the event for only $10. The Lancers will also honour their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
