Lancers host action packed weekend; Breast Cancer Awareness Day this Saturday

This weekend, the Windsor Lancers will host 8 games over the course of two days starting on Friday night and running through until Saturday evening.

As part of the action packed weekend, the Department of Athletics will host their annual Breast Cancer Awareness day this Saturday in Windsor.

The men's and women's volleyball team will kick off all the action on Friday night as they play host to the Toronto Varsity Blues. The women's will face-off at 6:00pm, while the men will take on the Blues at 8:00pm at the St. Denis Centre.

Head Coach Kevin Hamlin and the men's hockey team will then host the No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs in a highly anticipated match-up. The puck is set to drop at 7:30pm at Windsor Arena.

The team will also honour their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony, and help raise funds for Windsor Regional Hospital through the Hats on for Healthcare campaign.

On Saturday, the Lancers will trade in their traditional blue and gold for pink as they raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

Windsor's two basketball, two volleyball and women's hockey teams will “Get Their Pink On” prior to or during their OUA home games in support of the event.

The Lancers held their first awareness night back in 2007 involving both the men's and women's basketball teams and based on that success have included more varsity events since the inaugural event.

As part of the initiative, Lancer court teams will wear navy and pink warm-up shirts. The Lancer women's hockey team will use pink stick tape and pink laces in their skates

The day will start with the Lancer basketball teams hosting the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre. The No. 4 ranked men will kick everything off at 1:00pm, followed by the No. 1 women at 3:00pm. The men will also host their annual Alumni game on Saturday morning at 11:00am.

It's "Pink at the Rink" for women's hockey as the Lancer women play a 4:10pm game at South Windsor Arena against the No. 7 ranked Queen's Gaels. In addition to showing support for breast cancer awareness, it is also Senior's Day and the Lancers will recognize their graduating athletes prior to the puck drop.

Lancer Volleyball closes out the festivities on Saturday night in their second game of the weekend against the Ryerson Tams. Game time is set for 6pm for the women and 8pm for the men at the St. Denis Centre, following their Senior's Day presentations.

To raise money for Breast Cancer Research, pink Lancer t-shirts with a brand new design will be available for sale throughout the day for only $10 each. Pink “CIS Shoot for the Cure” reusable tote bags will be also available throughout the day for $5 each. Proceeds from these sales will go directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Lancer coaches will also be involved as they will be wearing pink behind the bench to show their support for the cause.

Tickets for Lancer basketball are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets for Lancer volleyball and hockey are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Be sure to join us this weekend for a terrific day of activity and to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.
