The Lancer men's volleyball team captured the bronze medal at the 34th annual Excalibur Volleyball Classic, hosted this week by York University.
Windsor played five grueling matches over three days, and defeated the Western Mustangs 3-1 (29-27, 25-22, 14-25, 25-19) in the consolation final to claim the bronze.
Kyle Williamson was named a tournament all-star.
Against Western, the Lancers played a balanced attack with
Greg Simone leading the way with 15 kills. Defensively, Gabe Bulacu came up huge for Windsor with four solo blocks, while
Laine Poirier had 10 digs.
The Lancers opened up the tournament with two tough games against the Sherbrooke Rouge et Or and the host York Lions. Windsor defeated the Rouge et Or 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-9), before takind down the Lions later that afternoon in five sets (31-29, 25-21, 19-25, 26-28, 15-12).
In the final game of round robin compeition on day two, Windsor once again played a long five sets and came away with the 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11) win over visiting Japan Budo.
After winning their pool, Windsor took on the Ryerson Rams in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Rams came out on top 3-1 (28-26, 19-25, 18-25, 13-25) to set up Windsor's contest against the Mustangs.
Windsor will return to regular season action next Friday when they travel up the 401 to again face the Mustangs at Alumni Hall at 8:00pm.
