Women's Hockey splits weekend games

The Lancer women's hockey team notched their first win of the season in a high scoring 7-5 win over the York Lions at South Windsor Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The win followed a 5-2 loss to the undefeated UOIT Ridgebacks in the team's home opener on Saturday. After the weekend, the Lancers are now 1-2-1 on the season.

Jenny MacKnight and Bree Polci each had a four point afternoon in the Lancer win, with MacKnight registering a hat trick and assist, while Polci chipped in two goals and two assists.

Sunday's game began slowly, with neither team finding the back of the net in the first period and the two squads combining for only 15 shots on goal. But that changed early in the second when Polci and Erinn Noseworthy scored a pair of power play goals in the first five minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

York's Lisa Stathopulos responded to Windsor's second goal a minute and a half later to cut the lead to 2-1, and added her second of the game at the 12:27 mark to tie it.

However, the draw would be short-lived as the Lancers took the lead again at the 13-minute mark with Polci's second of the game and wrapped up the second-period with MacKnight scoring her first of the game at 18:05 for a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

The Lancers continued to increase their lead early in the third period, and stretched it to four at the 11:18 mark with a pair of goals from Krysten Bortolotti and MacKnight.

The Lions attempted a comeback scoring three straight goals from Andrea Joyce at 13:04, Amy Locke at 15:24 and Sara Whitty at 17:59 on the power play.

A one goal game with only a minute left in regulation, the Lions pulled goaltender Megan Lee in favour of the extra attacker. However, the Lancers would spoil their attempt as MacKnight secured her hat trick and the win with an empty net goal at 18:54.

Lancer goaltender Marissa Kozovski made 18 saves on 23 shots for the win, while Lee had a busy day in net with 35 saves on 41 shots.

In heir first home game of the season against the Ridgebacks on Saturday, the Lancers struggled against the first place visitors.

The Blue & Gold fell behind 5-0 late in the third period before rookie Andrea Benac and senior Krysten Bortolotti scored a pair of goals late in the third to cut the UOIT win to 5-2.

The Lancers are back home next weekend for a pair of games against the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs.

Windsor will play the Lakers on Friday October 18th at 7:30pm at the WFCU Centre, while on Saturday October 19th will face Laurentian at Tecumseh Arena.
