The Lancer women's hockey team won a pair of games over the weekend as part of Hocktoberfest weekend in Windsor-Essex.
Led by a
Bree Polci hat trick, the Lancer women's hockey team shut out the Nipissing Lakers 7-0 on Friday night at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, and followed that up with a 3-2 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon at Tecumseh Arena.
With the wins, the Lancers earned their third straight victory and are currently 3-2-1 on the year.
On Friday night, rookie goaltender
Marissa Kozovski was outstanding between the pipes, turning aside 26 shots to earn her first OUA career shutout.
Polci opened the scoring late in the first period with her third goal of the season and Windsor went into the second period up a goal.
In the second, the Lancers found their scoring touch with three markers over ten minutes.
Candace Kourounis netted her first of the year at the five minute mark of the period, and Polci followed up with her second of the game just a minute and a half later.
Erinn Noseworthy closed out the period with her second of the year at 15:04.
The scoring continued through the final period as the Lancers continued to build on their lead. Rookie
Andrea Benac scored her third in as many games, before Polci completed her hat trick and Kourounis knotched her second of the game.
Kourounis and Polci led all skaters with four points a piece.
On Saturday, the Lancers came out strong as Benac opened the scoring just 1:08 into the first period against the Voyageurs.
Senior
Kayla Dodson scored her first goal of the season just two minutes later to give Windsor a two goal lead that held until mid-way through the second period when
Jenny MacKnight's power play goal gave the Lancers a comfortable three goal lead.
The Voyageurs did not back down however, scoring at 14:32 of the middle frame to cut the Lancer lead to two heading into the final period.
In the third, the Voyageurs continued to apply pressure and Samantha Morell scored her second of the game on the power play to bring the score within one with twelve minutes remaining.
The Lancers held on for the win, as Kozovski had another strong performance with 22 saves in net.
Windsor is back home next weekend when they host the Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm at South Windsor Arena.
