WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's football team will head to the University of Guelph this Saturday evening to take on the CIS No. 5 ranked Gryphons in the OUA quarter-finals.

The Lancers finished the 2013 regular season with a 4-4 record after dropping their past two contests to close out the year. The men were defeated 51-23 by the national No. 1 Western Mustangs on October 5, and followed that with a 45-15 setback in Ottawa against the Gee-Gees. The loss against Ottawa dropped Windsor to sixth-place and the final playoff spot in the conference, setting up a match against third-place Guelph (7-1), whose only defeat came against Queen's (7-1) in the final week of the season.

Windsor will look to shore up its defence in time for the elimination game on Saturday, having given up over 500 yards of offense in each of its last two games. This included a first-half last Saturday where the Gee-Gees notched 21 points in the first half, and went up 28-0 before the Lancers were able to respond midway through the third quarter.

Austin Kennedy finished the season 11th in the nation with an average of 240.0 yards of passing per game, and was fifth with an impressive 17 touchdown passes. The former OUA all-star also vastly improved upon his turnovers throughout the season, as he was intercepted on just five occasions in eight games compared to his 15 intercepted balls in 2012. Evan Pszczonak had another solid season, and took over the number one receiving role by averaging 92.3 receiving yards per game, good enough for sixth in the nation. He also caught six touchdown passes on the year for the Lancers.

Kennedy, Pszczonak and company must look to maintain a clean passing game against the stingy Gryphons defence who gave up just 17.4 points per game in the regular season, ranking them first in the OUA and fourth in the CIS. They also intercepted conference opponents 15 times throughout the season.

Quarterback Jazz Lindsay averaged 225.6 yards of passing per game for the Gryphons, while third-year running back Robert Farquharson picked up 104.8 yards per game in four contests this season on the ground. Guelph averaged a point total of 31.5 per game, ranking them last amongst the six OUA playoff combatants heading into the weekend. Windsor averaged 33.6 points scored per game.

In their match-up during Week 2 of the regular season, the Gryphons managed to steal a victory at home with a last second field goal to top the Lancers 24-23 after beginning with the ball on their own nine-yard line and just over a minute left in regulation. Pszczonak will look for a repeat performance from that afternoon where recorded 172 reception yards and a touchdown. 

Kick-off for Saturday's game is set for 8:00 p.m. A Lancers victory would set up a meeting with the Western Mustangs in the conference semifinals next weekend.
