TORONTO- The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team had to settle for a weekend split after falling to the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Arena.
The loss drops the Lancers to 4-4-1 on the season thus far, while the Varsity Blues improve to 6-1-1.
Windsor opened the scoring at the 7:22 mark of the first period, as
Jenny MacKnight picked up her sixth goal of the season on the power-play.
Kayla Dodson and
Candace Kourounis drew assists on the play as the Lancers went up 1-0. However, their only lead of the contest was short-lived as the Blues evened the game less than four minutes later.
A late first period marker gave Toronto its first lead of the contest, and they added an insurance marker in the second which would be more than enough to solidify the win.
Marissa Kozovski stopped 29 of 32 shots to take the loss for Windsor, and Nicole Kesteris turned aside an impressive 34 of 35 shots to help the Blues to victory. Windsor was 1-of-3 on special teams, while the Blues could not capitalize on two Lancer penalties.
Windsor will continue its road trip next weekend at Brock and Guelph, and are back at home on November 16 when the women will take on the Queen's Gaels.
