Box Score Drew Palmer notched two goals in the Lancers hard fought 3-2 double overtime victory over the York Lions in game one of the OUA West playoffs on Wednesday night in Toronto.
With the win, the Lancers hold a 1-0 lead in the best of three series. Game two will be played on Friday night at Windsor Arena at 7:30pm. Game three is slated for Saturday at the Barn, if necessary.
The first period was straight five-on-five hockey as both teams played it safe, not drawing a single penalty for the entire twenty minutes. Lancer goaltender
Parker Van Buskirk was solid in net throughout the period, turning away eleven shots, while Lions netminder Andrwe Perugini held off the Lancer attack.
The Lions managed to get on the board with just 0:42 seconds left in the frame with a goal from Troy Barss, to hold a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
In the second, Palmer scored his first of the night from
Ryan Crevatin and
Evan Stibbard at 13:45 to tie the game at one.
The score remained unchanged until 5:03 of the third period as Barss scored his second of the night to once again give the hosts the one goal advantage.
The Lancers pulled out all the stops for the remainder of the period, and had it pay off as Palmer fired the puck past Perugini with just 8 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime.
With the first overtime solving nothing, it took Windsor just two shots on net to earn the game winner at 6:02 of the second overtime.
Jadran Beljo was the hero of the hour, accepting a pass from
Brett Vandehogen and putting in behind Perugini for the win.
Windsor will look to clinch the series on Friday night when they host the Lions in game two at Windsor Arena. Prior to the game, the Lancers will honour their graduating seniors
Brett Vandehogen,
Brett Oliphant,
Steve Ferry, and
Christian Steingraber.
Tickets for the game are $8 for adults, and $5 for youth/senior. Fans are reminded that season passes are not valid for post season games.
