The Windsor Lancer men's volleyball program opens up the 2014-15 campaign on the road Saturday night against the OUA Champion McMaster Marauders
Â
The Lancer men's team is coming off of a broad preseason schedule that saw the Lancers travel between Ontario and British Columbia. Windsor went 3-2 in the preseason, earning wins against the Toronto Varsity Blues, St. Clair College and Niagara College.
Â
The Lancer squad will look to improve on last season which saw them finished 8-12 and just out of a playoff position. If the pre-season is any indication it appears as if the Lancers are well on their way to do so.
Â
The Lancers high flying offensive talent was displayed in the preseason and looks at continuing to roll as the regular OUA season commences Saturday. Fifth year middle blocker
Adam Thompson dominated offensively in the pre-season, along with setter
Andrew Chelladurai, left sides
Greg Simone and
Shawn Reaume, and Libero
Blase Wasser.
Â
Windsor should also see great things from third year right side Gabe Burlacu, who transitioned from middle blocker last season. With an explosive pre-season that included 24 kills in one game against Thomspon Rivers, head coach
James Gravelle expects to see great things from him.
Â
New additions include first year left side
Jake MacNeil who has already shown he can be a great spark coming off the bench. His experience playing high level beach volleyball at the Junior Olympics this past season will be key to him making a quick transition to the CIS.
Â
Windsor will also look to fifth year newcomer
Paul Borger to fill the void left by graduated senior
Scott Hickman. A transfer from Germany, Borger has experience and skill in the middle to make an immediate impact.
Â
"We plan to use the same defense-first formula as last season to win games in the very tough OUA conference," said Gravelle. "Our goal is to qualify for the playoffs and to host a first found match at the St. Denis Centre. After that, anything is possible."
Â
After two weekends on the road, the Lancers will open the home portion of their schedule on Halloween when they host the Guelph Gryphons at 8:00pm at the St. Denis Centre.
