Box Score GUELPH, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team remains in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the OUA conference after earning a must-win 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-19) triumph over the Guelph Gryphons at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre on Friday evening.
Greg Simone led the men with a game-high 13 kills and an impressive four service aces on the evening.
Gabriel Burlacu chipped in with 11 kills and worked at a .511 efficiency while
Blase Wasser led all players with 12 digs.
Andrew Chelladurai totalled 35 assists for the Lancers, who improve to 4-5 away from the St. Denis Centre.
After dropping the first set despite garnering a solid .333 hitting percentage, the men switched into another gear throughout the rest of the match, first taking advantage of a sluggish Guelph squad in the second set that recorded 10 errors. Windsor's efficiency rose once again from the second stanza, and they finished working at .500 in the fourth and final set of play, garnering 13 kills to just two errors.
The men finished with a .255 percentage compared to .096 from the hosts.
With the victory, the Lancers (8-11) slide temporarily into sixth-place in the OUA standings, one win ahead of the Queen's Gaels (7-11) who were idle on Friday night and hold a game in-hand. Windsor will solidify a playoff berth with either two Gaels losses this weekend, or a victory tomorrow night against the Waterloo Warriors (15-3) and one Queen's defeat.
The latter would seem to be the more realistic scenario, as the Gaels are in Kingston, Ont. this weekend, hosting Ryerson (12-7) and Toronto (5-13). Queen's is 4-4 as the home team this year, but have lost to both the Rams and Varsity Blues once already this season.
The Lancers take on Waterloo at 8:00 p.m. at the Physical Activities Complex. Windsor last met the Warriors on October 26 at the St. Denis Centre, where the guests came away with a five-set victory.
