The No. 5 Lancer men's soccer team closed out the festivities on Alumni Weekend with a hard earned 2-1 win over the visiting No. 7 McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Â
With the win, the Lancers improve to 9-1-1 on the season and remain atop the standings in the OUA west division, while the Marauders fall to 8-3-0 and continue to sit in second place.
Â
Some great passing early in the game got Windsor on the board first with Leighton Speechly-Price finding the back of the net in the eighth minute. The Lancers' strong formation throughout the half allowed them to control the game and hold the one goal lead heading into the second half.
Â
Just two minutes into the second half, rookie
Noah Pio pulls three Marauder defenders and their goalie out of the net, and squeezes a pass to Speechly-Price who taps it into the open net for his second of the game.
Â
McMaster got on the board ten minutes later when a scramble in front of the Lancer net allowed Stefan Sholtz to get the ball past Lancer goaltender
Kyle Vizirakis.
Â
The final ten minutes proved to be a challenge for both teams but the Lancers held on to earn their seventh straight victory.
Â
Windsor will now host the Guelph Gryphons and Brock Badgers on Thanksgiving weekend. Windsor and Guelph will kick off on Friday night, October 9th, at 6:00pm, while the Lancers will play the Badgers on Saturday at 3:15pm.Â
