The nationally ranked Windsor Lancer basketball programs will open the 2015-16 regular season on Wednesday night against the Laurier Golden Hawks at the St. Denis Centre.
The reigning five-time CIS national championship Lancer women will have all eyes on them for the 2015-16 season as they look to win an unprecedented sixth straight national championship title. The Lancers enter the season having won six of the last seven OUA championships and have shown great promise throughout the pre-season despite the loss of a pair of key players from the roster.
With the loss of CIS athlete of the year
Korissa Williams and guard
Jocelyn LaRocque, Windsor will rely on OUA all-star
Cheyanne Roger, guard
Caitlyn Longmuir, and forwards
Emily Prevost and
Andrea Kiss to fill the key roles left by the two.
Coach Vallée's squad also features plenty of fresh faces as they welcome eight new athletes to the roster. Highlighting the group are transfer guard and Michigan native
Kashawnna Sampson, Waterloo native Kaylee Anagnatopolous, forward
Orian Amsalem, and guard
Tyra Blizzard out of Ottawa.
Prior to the women's tip-off the Department of Athletics will recognize the Lancers with their championships rings and will raise their banner into the rafters of the St. Denis Centre.
On the men's side, the Lancers will be under new leadership for the 2015-16 season as Lancer head coach Chris Oliver takes a sabbatical for the year. In his absence, former Lancer and OUA all-star
Ryan Steer will take over the helm as the acting head coach of the Lancers.
Coming off a strong 2014-15 season that saw the Lancers capture their sixth OUA west division title in ten years and an OUA silver medal, the Blue & Gold are aiming to stay atop the division standings and earn a second consecutive berth to the national championships.
Windsor went an impressive 7-3 in pre-season exhibition play pulling off two wins against the NCAA's University of Indianapolis and had strong showing at the Graham Shootout in Saskatchewan and the RBC Brock Classic.
Coach Steer's squad will be led by a trio of veterans including forward
Alex Campbell, guard
Mike Rocca and sharp shooter
Mitch Farrell. Farrell was named an OUA all-star last season after averaging 13.1 points per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds per contest. The Lancer line-up will also feature a number of talented incoming recruits including local standout
Isiah Osborne, London's Mr. Basketball
Micah Kirubel and Michigan big man
Pim Hurkmans.
The action starts at 6:00pm for the women, followed by the men at 8:00pm. Season tickets will be available for purchase at the gate, which opens at 5:00pm.
