Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lancers play strong against Marauders & Lions

The Lancer men's soccer team had a tough weekend of competition facing two of the top four ranked teams in the country. On Saturday, the Lancers dropped a 2-1 decision to the #4 ranked McMaster Marauders before coming to a 2-2 draw against the #1 ranked York Lions on Sunday.

Windsor is now 2-1-1 on the season as they head into their first home games of the 2015 season next weekend.

Against McMaster, the Lancers started slow allowing the Marauders to build a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Windsor dominated possession for much of the second half as they searched for the goals needed to scrap out a point. Their efforts were largely thwarted at the back, until a loose ball squirted to Iyowuna Jumbo at the far post, who easily tapped in to half Windsor's deficit in the 84th minute.

On Sunday against the nation's top team, the first half had a balanced diet of ball movement, solid goalkeeping and well-executed defensive strategy. Both sides played an aggressive style which led to multiple stoppages, ultimately leading to a slower pace of a game. That being said, both Windsor and York managed to get on the score board with two team-executed goals.

The Lions opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Matt Stinson was given a touch pass from Michael Cox just outside the box that Stinson capitalized on and shot past Windsor goalkeeper Kyle Vizirakis.

A few clicks later in the 42nd minute the Lancers attacked the Lions midfield and launched a deep shot that was initially saved by goalkeeper Colm Vance, but a juicy rebound was produced which the Lancers pounced on and Leighton Speechley-Price tapped it past the goal line.

In the 70th minute, a great individual effort by Michael Pio gave the Lancers the lead. Pio utilized his fancy footwork and beat multiple Lion defenders to put the Lancers up 2-1.

Vizirakis stood on his head on Sunday, making big save after big save during the latter parts of the match, but he ultimately couldn't withstand the immense pressure produced by the Lions' offence and allowed the late goal by Jarek Whiteman.

The Lancers will finally head home to Alumni Field and host the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, September 11th at 8:15pm and the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, September 13th at 3:!5pm.
