For the second straight game, the No. 7 Lancer women's basketball team came away with a victory over their rivals the Western Mustangs.
Â
Following a dominate 70-48 win on Wednesday at the St. Denis Centre, the Lancers had to come from behind on Saturday to defeat the Mustangs 77-71 at Alumni Hall in London. The win moves the Lancers to 10-2 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 5-7.
Â
Emily Prevost and
Caitlyn Longmuir led the way for the Blue & Gold, scoring 22 and 21 points respectively in the victory. Prevost also led her team's rebound efforts, with eight boards in the game.
Â
Windsor built a double-digit lead early in the first quarter but constant perimeter pressure and strong interior defence by the hosts trimmed the Windsor lead down to just eight points heading into the second frame.
Â
The second quarter opened with Western's continuing to cut into the Lancer lead. The Mustangs defense forced Windsor into 11 first-half turnovers and the extra possessions for Western ultimately led to an eventual 34-28 Mustang lead going into halftime.
Â
The second half opened with the Mustangs taking advantage of some long-range opportunities to grow their lead to nine points. However, a Lancers' scoring display, featuring a pair of threes from
Caitlyn Longmuir, would shave the Mustang advantage to just two points late in the third quarter.
Â
Neither team found a way to build a decisive lead throughout the final frame until Windsor's aggressiveness rewarded them with five free throw attempts in the final two minutes to give the Lancers the six-point victory.
Â
Windsor will now travel to Sault Ste. Marie for a weekend doubleheader against the Algoma Thunderbirds. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm on both Friday and Saturday and can be seen live on
