The Lancer women's hockey team opened the 2017 playoffs with a 3-0 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night in Guelph.
Â
The victory gives the top seeded Gryphons a 1-0 series lead over the Lancers in the best-of-three quarterfinal series. Game two is scheduled for Friday night in Windsor at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena.
Â
Wednesday night's matchup marked the second time in the last four days that the Gryphons and Lancers squared off. This past Saturday (Feb. 18), the Gryphons recorded a 7-2 victory over the Lancers in what was the second-to-last game of the regular season schedule.
Â
The Lancers outshot the hosts 27-17 but could not get past Gryphon goaltender Valerie Lamenta.
Morgan Farrow made 14 saves in the loss for the Blue & Gold.
Â
At the 14:27 mark of the 1st period the Gryphons opened the scoring after Claire Merrick corralled her own rebound and set up Kaitlin Lowy right in front of Farrow.
Â
The Gryphons would extend their lead to 2-0 just 15 seconds into the second period when Katherine Bailey stepped into a point shot on the power play. Later in the period, the hosts would once again strike on the man advantage with Lowy getting a rebound and firing the shot into the top corner for her second of the night.
Â
The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30pm on Friday night at South Windsor Arena in game two of the series. Tickets are available at the door starting at 6:30pm. The game can also be seen live at
