Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer falls to Gryphons & Lions

The Lancer men's soccer team dropped a pair of games to open the 2017 season Friday & Saturday at Alumni Field.

Windsor played a close game Friday night and narrowly fell to the Guelph Gryphons 4-3, before being shut out by the visiting York Lions on Saturday 2-0.

Friday vs Guelph
The men kicked off their OUA regular season against the Guelph Gryphons, who finished their season last year with a national bronze medal.

After conceding an early goal, the men settled down and Jamar Redhead finished the Lancers first shot attempt of the game.

Kyle Ruggaber made the most of his opportunities Friday night. In the 42 minute he finished off a great connection out of the back through the midfield, and then just five minutes later in the 47th minute, Ruggaber connected on a strike that found the back of the net.

Guelph started their comeback shortly after; three unanswered goals led the visitors to a 4-3 victory.

Saturday vs York
A year after tying the nationally ranked York Lions at Alumni field, the Lancers looked to have another competitive battle Saturday night.

Both teams battled well in the first half, the Lancers defense stood tall as the Lions continually pushed the ball and attacked. Third year goalkeeper Greg Chac stood on his head making 15 out of 17 saves to keep his team in the game.

The Lions got on the board quickly in the second half in the 54th and 55th minute. The challenge turned out to be too much for the Lancer men as they had trouble generating any offense leading to zero shots on the night.

Head Coach Steve Vagnini understands the entire season will be a battle, "We don't have the depth that teams like Guelph and York have. We definitely have our work cut out for us but we did have glimpses of hope. Now we take this lesson and continue working, we need to train to win."

UP NEXT
