Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Windsor earns pair of draws opening weekend

The Lancer women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a pair of ties this weekend at Alumni Field.

Windsor kicked off the season with a 0-0 draw against the Guelph Gryphons on Friday night before tying the York Lions 1-1 on Saturday.

Friday vs Guelph
The women Lancers were eager to start their OUA regular season off against Guelph Friday night.

With a healthy mix of veteran talent and freshmen energy, the Lancers fought a hard battle with their nerves but settled into consistent play against a strong and athletic Guelph team.

OUA all-star Krystin Lawrence recorded her first shutout of the season, tallying nine saves while controlling her back line.

Depth on the bench is not a problem with the Lancer squad this season, as it was a year ago. Five second half substitutions were made as the team tried to figure out how to break the scoreless affair.

Both teams battled back and forth although were never able to finish their opportunities, a 0-0 final secured the Lancers first points of their young season.

Saturday vs York
Saturday night, the Lancers took on the York women's team in a much anticipated game.

After back and forth play throughout the first half, the Lancers found the back of the net. Fifth year captain Giulia Barile bent her free kick just over the wall to beat the keeper to swing the games momentum to the Lancers side.

The women kept their lead until conceding a late goal in the 90th minute by York's Christina Morelli. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, earning the women points in two consecutive games.

"The girls are taking a while to settle, but they are playing a new system which will take some time to get used to. We played a lot of first year players this weekend, and all of them performed well." – Women's head coach Steve Hart.

UP NEXT
The women will take their first trip up the 401 next weekend as they battle the Brock Badgers Saturday at 1:00PM, and the McMaster Marauders Sunday at 1:00PM. The games will not be livestreamed on OUA.tv, so be sure to check social media for game updates.
