Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey defeats Mustangs in London

The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team took to the road this weekend for a date with their rivals the Western Mustangs. The Lancers hit the ice with energy and grabbed the lead early, never needing to look back on the way to a 3-2 over win in London.

GAME STATS
Alex Friesen and Kyle Hope were key facilitators for the Lancers, notching two assists each.

Johnathan Reinhart had a good outing in net, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Western's Luke Peresini finished with 34 stops on 37 shots.

The Lancers out-shot the Mustangs 47-33 on the night, controlling the pace of play throughout the game.

GAME FLOW
Things got off to a good start for the Lancers as they got the first goal of the game when Kody Gangon beat Luke Peresini early on. Alex Friesen and Kyle Hope picked up assists on the play. Just three minutes later it was Hope and Friesen picking up assists again as Ethan Skinner put one past Peresini to put the Lancers up 2-0. Just before the intermission the Mustangs cut into the lead when Ethan Szypula beat Johnathan Reinhart on a penalty shot, putting the Lancers up 2-1 heading into the break.

The second period was tightly contested as neither team was able to change the scoreboard. The period was so tightly matched with both teams trying to break through that they both managed to get 13 pucks on net each. Windsor's fast skating attack was able to put 23 pucks on target in the first period but struggled to maintain the success.

In the third period Ben Assad added to the Lancers lead early taking the first shot of the period and rifling it past Peresini to put the Lancers up 3-1 just 30 seconds into the frame. The Lancers hung tough and controlled most of the period, outshooting the trailing Mustangs 11-8 in the period. Western finally got through, with just over two minutes remaining Trevor Warnaar beat Reinhart. A late goaltender interference call iced any chance the Mustangs had of completing the comeback as the Lancers took the game 3-2.
