Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Windsor sweeps weekend road trip up north

Coming off a two-game losing streak, the Lancer women's basketball team rebounded with a weekend sweep of their road trip up north against the Laurentian Voyageurs and Nipissing Lakers.

Windsor defeated the Voyageurs 71-60 Friday night before dominating the Lakers 63-39 Saturday.

Heading into the Christmas break, the Lancers are 6-5 on the season and sit in third in the OUA west division.

FRIDAY @ LAURENTIAN
The Lancers came out with a quick start to the game. The blue and gold were unstoppable from beyond the arc, making shot after shot, running to a quick 14-5 lead.

The Voyageurs responded with poor shot selections, throwing everything at the net. Good post play at the end of the quarter saw them end the period trailing 22-12.

The Lancers kept their momentum to start the second quarter, going on a nine-point run in the first two minutes. Great ball movement, combined with strong offensive boards, saw the Lancers begin to run away with the game.

Trailing by 20, the Voyageurs began to find success on the fast break. An impressive run saw them narrow the deficit to only 12 points.

With the momentum now on their side, Laurentian continued their run into the third frame. The Voyageurs applied heavy defensive pressure with the double team, taking away the Lancers three point shot.

Struggling to put points on the board, the Lancers began taking fouls, sending the Voyageurs to the free throw line. Laurentian also saw their own success from the field, narrowing the deficit to within three points halfway through the quarter.

The closing minutes of the frame saw the Lancers find their groove, as they began to move the ball to find the player in the post for the easy layup and manage to widen the gap to end the quarter.

As the Voyageurs continued to push the Lancers, Windsor continued their gameplay of finding the post player. The blue and gold managed to hold Laurentian off, to escape with a 71-60 win.

SATURDAY @ NIPISSING
The Lancers and Lakers got off to a similar start, but the Lancers really got things going with a run midway through the first quarter. Sparked by an Erin Kenny three Windsor went on an 11-0 run before the Lakers fought their way back into the game. Windsor held a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter the blue and gold continued to build their lead with consistent production on both ends, going into the half up 36-21.

After the break the Lancers continued asserting their dominance on the court, building and maintaining a 20-point lead between themselves and the Lakers. The Lancers defense buckled down and didn't allow a single three point make in the second half. The Lancers also capitalized on turnovers netting 19 points off turnovers on the night.

Eve Uwayesu put in a great effort on her way to a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Carly Steer led all scorers with 16 points on the night, while the Lakers were led Jamie Soffer with 10 points.

The Lancers had a great day on the glass, beating the Lakers in the rebound margin handily, 54-16.
