The Lancer men's soccer team opened the 2018-19 season with a pair of touch road losses. Windsor fell 2-0 to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday afternoon, and then 5-0 Sunday night against the York Lions in Toronto.Â
Â
FRIDAY vs GUELPH
After a scoreless first half, Guelph Jace Kotsopoulos would break the deadlock on a strange set piece in the 48th minute. Guelph was awarded a free kick approximately 30 metres out in the middle of the field. The Gryphon striker lashed a low hard shot that Hunter initially got to. But the keeper spilled it, allowing the Gryphons to take a 1-0 lead.
Â
Kotsopoulos scored his second of the game on a penalty kick in the 69th minute. He took a left-footed swing a ball in the area but was brought down. The referee gave the penalty kick and Kostsopoulos buried his strike just inside of the Lancers left post.
Rookie goaltender
Shawn Hunter made two saves as both teams registered four shots on net. Guelph's Erik Hermanns earned a shut out between the pipes for the hosts.
Â
SUNDAY vs YORK
The Lancers struggled from the opening kick to gain any momentum throughout the game. Their talent and skill were showcased in a few series throughout the game, but the Blue & Gold were unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities.Â
UP NEXT
The Lancers come home to Alumni Field on Friday August 31, 2018 when they host the Brock Badgers at 8:15pm.Â
