Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lancers upset Marauders to open 2019

Heading into Saturday's game against the McMaster Marauders, the Lancers were coming off a win in their last contest before the holidays and were looking to keep the momentum going to start 2019 on the right foot. The Lancers came out strong and got the job done in four sets defeating the Marauders 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 26-24, 25-13).

GAME STATS
Paige Phills and Jessie Nairn both had great afternoons, leading their teams in kills with 14 each.

McMaster's Zoe Mackintosh put in a solid effort on defense, leading the game with 20 digs. The Lancers were led by Jade Ziebarth on defense with 17 digs.

The Lancers were just a tad more efficient than the Marauders on the attack, achieving a kill percentage of .147 to McMaster's .134 per cent.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers got off to a slow start in the first set but battled back before falling too far out of the game. Led by Phills, the Lancers chose their spots wisely against a solid McMaster defensive unit. The Lancers offense did enough, winning the set 25-20 to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set McMaster counter punched, and on their home floor they took an early lead and didn't look back. Led by Nairn and her six kills, the Marauders replicated their defensive success while managing to score, taking the set 25-18 to tie the game up at one set each.

The Lancers and Marauders both came out strong to start the third set. The Lancers' slim lead dwindled early and the set quickly turned into a back and forth. This continued late into the set but a nice kill from Phills sealed the set for the Lancers 26-24 as the blue and gold took a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was all Lancers early as jumped out to a 17-5 lead over the Marauders. McMaster found some footing and stabilized themselves.  The Lancers however, were on a mission, and not slowing down as they downed the Marauders 25-13 in the fourth set to pick up an impressive road win, 3-2.
