Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong defense lifts Windsor over Waterloo

The Windsor Lancers were back on their home floor for their first midweek test of the season against the Waterloo Warriors. The Lancers blew out of the gates with an explosive offense, and despite some rough patches the result was rarely in doubt as the Lancers picked up another home win in 2019, 72-50.

The Lancers were playing a Waterloo team that has struggled this season, but playing without stars Kayah Clarke and Kaylee Anagnostopolous the Lancers couldn't afford to take their opponent lightly.

GAME STATS
The Lancers defense was suffocating most of the night, allowing just 25 per cent of shots from the field and 20 per cent from three. The Lancers meanwhile shot 37 and 32 per cent respectively.

Carly Steer came up big, leading all scorers with 19 points. The Warriors were led by Beth Howlett who scored nine points.

The Lancers won the battle on the boards, bringing in 43 rebounds to the Warriors' 33.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers started the game on an offensive tear, and had one of their best performances of the season from beyond the arc. Using a solid mix of size inside and Carly Steer on the outside, the Lancers shot an impressive 62 per cent from behind the line, including a perfect 3-for-3 mark from Steer.  After the first quarter the Lancers had worked their way to a decent lead, up 19-10. The Warriors went on a run towards the end of the quarter to bring what had ballooned into a double digit lead for the Lancers back into reach, but Windsor went into the break with a 35-26 lead.

Windsor continued their strong defensive play in the third but struggled to find consistent offensive success as the quarter went. The three point shot, which was a weapon early in the game, was not dropping for the Lancers forcing them into adjustments. They eventually got back on track and kept their foot on the gas pedal in the fourth quarter, leading by as many as 20 in the final frame, to win the game 72-50.
