The Windsor Lancers burst back into the win column Saturday evening in Toronto with an 86-47 victory over the Varsity Blues.
Â
Head coach Chantal Vallée was still sidelined from injuries sustained in a car accident earlier in the week, and assistant coach Madeline Belding took the reigns for the second straight game. The blue and gold were also still without
Kayah Clarke who missed her second game due to injury.
Â
Windsor got out to a slow start in the first quarter but their offense rounded into form and their defense kept them well ahead for most of the way, improving their record to 5-1 on the season.
Â
GAME STATS
Eve Uwayesu led the game in scoring, dropped 20 points on 64 per cent shooting. The Blues were led by Nakeisha Ekwandja who dropped 12 points on 57 per cent shooting.
Â
Olivia Osamusali was a monster defender inside with five blocks on the night.
Â
Kaylee Anagnostopoulos led the game in assists with three. UofT was led by Christine Jurcau who dished out two.
Â
GAME FLOW
The Lancer offense struggled on the road for a second straight game, shooting just 33 per cent from the field and 14 per cent from deep. However, despite the Varsity Blues shooting 60 per cent from beyond three, the Lancers and Blues remained close, tied at 16 after the opening quarter.
Â
The blue and gold came out with different energy in the second, jumping out to a quick 20-16 lead and expanding it with two buckets in the paint from Anagnostopoulos.
Â
Windsor moved the ball better in the second quarter as well, finding open shooters from beyond the arc with crisp passing, growing their lead to 33-18 with 4:14 left in the half. While the Lancers offense found its stride, the defense held the Blues to just four points in the quarter as Windsor enjoyed a 38-20 halftime lead.
Â
The blue and gold continued their offensive dominance heading into the third quarter, as Anagnostopoulos was a sparkplug for the Lancers, getting into the paint and having success down low. The Lancers shooting that hurt them in the first half was their strength in the second as they hit 40 per cent of their outside looks with under five minutes to go in the game. Windsor held the Blues to 22 per cent from the field and just 13 per cent from deep, helping the Lancers win in dominating fashion, 86-47.
