Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lancers stay in playoff hunt with weekend sweep

The Lancer women's volleyball team had a solid weekend on the road earning two victories over the Nipissing Lakers and York Lions. The Lancers defeated the Lakers in four sets 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 20-25, 25-10) before sweeping the Lions 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-21).

The two victories keep the Blue & Gold in the playoff hunt heading into their final weekend of competition next week at the St. Denis Centre.

SATURDAY @ NIPISSING
After trailing early in the first, Windsor fought back and off an Alana Gyemi kill took the lead 10-9. The Lancers held the lead right through to win the set with a kill from Paige Phills.

The second set was all blue and gold as they came out fast building a comfortable lead over the hosts.  The Lancers got great production both offensively and defensively on their way to a 2-0 lead, winning the set 25-16.

The Lakers came out much more efficient in the third and went on a seven-point run punctuated by a Stephanie Armstrong ace to give Nipissing a 14-7 lead. Windsor had a few good plays throughout the rest of the set, but the Lakers held on to win 25-20.

The fourth set was controlled by the Lancers throughout. The blue and gold enjoyed a modest lead early but inched their way out of reach, leading 16-5 at the technical timeout. The Lancers were the far more efficient side and things didn't get better for the Lakers after the timeout, dropping the set and match the visiting Lancers, 25-10 and 3-1.

Hannah Camrass led all players in kills with 14 on the day, while Amie Slawson had 15 digs.  Nipissing was led by Shayla Kessler with 12. Brooke Davis was the best teammate on the floor, setting up a remarkable 51 assists.

SUNDAY @ YORK
Tied 5-5 to open the game, the Lancers went on a 14-5 run to give the visitors a comfortable 19-10 lead. Megan Kalbffleisch's time at the service line kicked off a 6-1 run, and back to back kills by Ally Winik secured the win.

In the second, the Lions hit back with a fierce defense and an opportunistic offense. To their credit, the Lancers followed with much of the same and worked their way out to a narrow 16-14 lead at the technical. York retook the lead briefly, but the Blue & Gold refused to back down and another Winik kill gave the Lancers the win in extra points.

The Lancers trailed in the early going of the third set. The Lions held a lead into the technical timeout, threatening to add a fourth set the match. From there the Lancers came out more focused, determine to keep the game short and sweet. The Lancers immediately took the lead and capitalized on some York mistakes to take the set 25-21, winning the match 3-0.
