The Windsor Lancers opened 2020 with a huge OUA win, downing the Laurier Golden Hawks 75-57 Saturday afternoon in Waterloo.
 
The Lancers relied on a bevy of scorers, with four Lancers in double digits, including Samantha Gucciardi who led the way with 17 points.
 
GAME STATS
Gucciardi led all scorers with 17 points on 56 per cent shooting, Eve Uwayesu was a fantastic facilitator, leading the game with seven assists.
 
The Golden Hawks were led by Tayania Siwek-Smith who scored 13 on 60 per cent shooting, while Rachel Woodburn was the best passer for Laurier with five assists.
 
The Lancers defense was intense, forcing 17 turnovers and nine steals on the day.
 
GAME FLOW
The Lancers got things going early on the inside, scoring their first few buckets from the paint.  Although Laurier tried to do the same, the blue and gold gained some separation on the game's first three, a rainbow from the top of the arc from Jordan Gutt. Into the second quarter the Lancers slowly built a lead over the Hawks and Harriet Carey made it a 10-point game with a corner three. Unfortunately for the Lancers, they finished the half ice cold and only led by five at the half, 35-30.
 
The second half was decidedly blue and gold as the Lancers took the floor after the break and quickly went to work extending their once large lead. Windsor controlled the pace and picked their spots in the second half, ballooning their lead to 24 with just minutes to go in the game, mainly with their defense to thank. Despite a ton of fight the Golden Hawks couldn't figure out the Lancers defence as Windsor won by a solid 75-57 margin.
