Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lancers sweep weekend; break Gaels win streak

The Windsor Lancers women's volleyball team put on a show for UWindsor Proud night in front of a raucous Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse crowd on Saturday night. The Lancers defeated the Queen's Gaels 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, & 15-13) snapping the Gaels six-game winning streak heading into the contest.

The win was an important one for the Lancer ladies as they look to continue chasing a playoff spot in a tough OUA West division. The huge pair of home wins towards their playoff push this weekend improved the Lancers to 5-6 on the season to date.

GAME STATS
Lexi Pollard led the way for the Lancers offensively with 16 kills on the evening. Fellow outside hitters Hannah Camrass and Yaila Sealy each chipped in significantly offensively with 13 kills for the former and 12 kills for the latter respectively. Veteran playmaker Brooke Davis picked up 38 assists in the marvelous victory.

The Gaels were led by both outside hitters Arielle Palermo and Julia Wiercigroch who each had 19 kills on the night for Queen's.

GAME FLOW
In the first set, the Lancers struggled to produce a consistent offensive flow as the Gaels benefited off of Windsor's mistakes. In addition to the Lancers errors, Queen's strong play particularly from Palermo and Wiercigroch gav them the edge on to take the first set down the stretch and go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, the young Lancers managed to hang around the Gaels trading points frequently and ultimately breaking away towards the later stages on the set to tie the game at 1-1.

In the third set, it started off close like the previous two sets. However, in the end, the Gaels regained their edge and dialed in their focus especially down the stretch managing to take a 2-1 lead in the contest and regaining the set advantage in the match.

In the fourth set, the Lancers set the tone this time around although it still remained a close contest early on like the first three sets of the match. The blue and gold kept their foot on the gas though tightening up on their mistakes and keeping their composure late to earn another set victory and tie the match up at 2-2.

In the fifth set, the Lancers would continue to give the Gaels problems and ultimately became too much for Queen's to handle as Windsor got to 8 points first before switching sides. Strong consistent all-around play helped the Lancers stabilize the Gaels and take the set by a slim margin of two points but nonetheless though they took down a red-hot Gaels team which came into the contest with 6-straight wins in their last 6 matches. The Lancers resilience and perseverance continued to play a factor in their team's success this season and will have to as they remain competitive in the playoff hunt.
