The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team opened 2020 in the win column Friday night after a two goal second period lifted them to a 3-1 road win against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Â
The blue and gold started the decade on the right foot, scoring first and never trailing despite the Lancers being called for seven penalties. The win keeps the Lancers squarely in the hunt for top spot in the OUA West.
Â
GAME STATS
Jonathan Reinhart was spectacular in net, making 15 saves on 16 shots. Laurier's Matt Williams had a great night as well, stopping 18 of 21 shots.
Â
Alex Freisen led the game in points with two, both on assists. The Lancers shared the puck well, logging six assists on three goals.
Â
GAME FLOW
The first period was a tightly contested one between the two squads. The blue and gold led the early frame in shots, just slightly at 7-6 but both goalies played a fantastic 20 minutes to open their 2020 OUA slates. Both Reinhart and Williams shut the door on the opposing skaters, deadlocking the game at 0-0 after the first 20 minutes.
Â
The Lancers didn't take too long to break the scoreless trend, just 43 seconds into the second period,
Connor Matton put one past Williams as the beneficiary of
John Wesley's pass. Both Reinhart and Williams made a couple of highlight saves to keep the game a 1-0 affair. Despite the saves, Williams let one sneak past him when
Brady Pataki slipped a tip-in past the goalie, doubling the Lancers lead late. After 40 minutes Windsor led 2-0 behind a solid offensive period.
Â
The Golden Hawks finally got on the board in the third period when Anthony Sorrentino busted Rienhart's hopes of opening 2020 with a shutout and more importantly, made it just a one goal game with plenty of time. The Hawks stymied their own momentum though, with a penalty shortly after the goal, just after the penalty,
Ryan Shaw restored the Lancers' two goal lead.
