The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team came up short in overtime Friday night, falling 3-2 to the Waterloo Warriors on the road. Despite trailing early, the Lancers took the lead in the second period but couldn't hold off a determine Waterloo attack late.

Jaydlin Spooner was fantastic between the pipes, making 43 saves on 46 shots. Waterloo's Mikayla Schnarr stopped 29 of 32 shots.

Avery Mertz had her best game of the season netting her first two goals of the campaign.

GAME FLOW
Things got off to a rough start for the Lancers in their first OUA action of 2020. Waterloo's
Krystin Lawrence beat Spooner cleanly just 2:54 into the game, putting the Warriors up 1-0 early. Fortunately for the Lancers they had an answer just five minutes later as Mertz netted her first goal of the season on a powerplay chance to tie the game. After the early goal Spooner redeemed herself, making a couple great saves and ensuring a tie game at intermission, 1-1.

The second period was a back and forth affair with both sides pelting the opposing goal with shots. Spooner continued to be brilliant in the second period, turning back shot after shot as the Lancers and Warriors vied for the lead. Just before the halfway mark, one side broke through as Mertz scored her second goal of the game (and season) to give the Lancers the 2-1 lead. After forty the Lancers led, 2-1.

Spooner's hot play continued into the third period as the Lancers closed in on their first win of 2020. However, the Warriors were beginning to tilt the ice in their favour. Waterloo doubled up the Lancers in third period shots, 13-6, and eventually the Warriors cashed in. Just over ten minutes into the period, Waterloo's Brooklyn Cole beat Spooner and tied the game. Despite leading since the second period, the Lancers would have to settle for overtime.

The extra period didn't last long however, as Brooklyn Sarnovski ended the Lancers hopes for a win with a goal just 22 seconds into the extra frame, sealing a 3-2 win for her Warriors.
