Lancers host action packed weekend; 13th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend

This weekend, the Windsor Lancers will host 8 games and a track meet over the course of three days starting on Friday night and running through until Sunday afternoon.

As part of the action packed weekend, the Department of Athletics will host their 13th annual Breast Cancer Awareness day on Saturday and Sunday.

The men's and women's basketball team will kick off all the action on Friday night as they play host to the York Lions. The women's will face-off at 6:00pm, while the men will take on the Lions at 8:00pm at the St. Denis Centre.

Head coach Kevin Hamlin and the men's hockey team will also host the No. 6 Ryerson Rams on Friday. The puck is set to drop at 7:30pm at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

On Saturday, the Lancers will trade in their traditional blue and gold for pink as they raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

Windsor's two basketball, two volleyball teams, and men's hockey team will "Get Their Pink On" prior to or during their OUA home games in support of the 13th annual event.

The Lancers held their first awareness night back in 2007 involving both the men's and women's basketball teams and based on that success have included more varsity events since the inaugural event.

As part of the initiative, the Lancers will wear a commemorative warm-up shirt to honour a decade of awareness.

The day will start with the Lancer volleyball teams hosting the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre. The women will kick everything off at 12:00pm, followed by the men at 2:00pm.

Over at the CPRC, the Lancer men's hockey team will take on the No. 5 Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:30pm. Prior to the game, the Lancers will also honor their graduating senior, Alex Friesen.

Lancer basketball closes out the festivities on Saturday night in their second game of the weekend against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Game time is set for 6:00pm for the women and 8:00pm for the men at the St. Denis Centre. They will also honour their graduating seniors in two pre-game ceremonies.

To raise money for Breast Cancer Research, Lancer breast cancer t-shirts will be available for sale throughout the day for only $12 each. Pink "Shoot for the Cure" reusable tote bags will be also available throughout the day for $2 each. Proceeds from these sales will go directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Lancer coaches will also be involved as they will be wearing pink behind the bench to show their support for the cause.

On Sunday, the Lancer track & field team host eleven schools in the 30th annual Team Challenge. The men's weight throw kicks off the event at 9:00am, with track events starting at 12:00pm. Doors will open at 11:00am.

Tickets for Lancer basketball are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Tickets for Lancer volleyball, hockey, and track & field are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Be sure to join us this weekend for a terrific few days of activity and to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.
