MacLean and Weese named U SPORTS Honours Awards recipients

Two former University of Windsor staff members have won U SPORTS Honours Awards for their significant contributions to university sport in Canada, as announced at U SPORTS's Conference and Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 3 in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Dr. Joanne MacLean has been named the recipient of the Austin-Matthews Award, presented to an individual who demonstrated a long-term commitment to university sport as an administrator or director.

MacLean was formerly the University of Windsor athletic director and also served as head coach of Lancer women's basketball from 1985-96, making her the longest tenured women's basketball coach in program history as of the conclusion of her coaching career.

This is the second time a winner of the award had connections to Windsor, with the most recent being Dr. Bob Boucher in 2021.

Dr. Jim Weese has been awarded the L.B. "Mike" Pearson Award as a distinguished Canadian citizen of outstanding lifelong achievements in university athletics and has exemplified the ideals and purposes of university athletics and amateur sport.

Weese (BHK 1980, MHK 1983) served as Dean of the Faculty of Human Kinetics. He was inducted into the University of Windsor Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and awarded the University of Windsor Alumni Association Award of Merit in 2023. Weese spent 18 years with the Lancers, seven of which were as the dean of Human Kinetics.

This is the second time the award has been won by a Windsor representative, with Mike Havey being the first in 2022.
