Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball doubles up on Thunderwolves

The No. 7 Windsor Lancers remained in the win column Saturday night, doubling up on the Lakehead Thunderwolves 81-42 on Windsor's Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Celebrating senior's day, the Lancers also sent senior Kaylee Anaganostopoulos out as a winner.

The home win keeps the Lancers in the hunt for first place in the OUA West, currently held by the Western Mustangs. In order to overtake the Mustangs, the Lancers must win out which they got off to a good start tonight.

GAME STATS
The Lancers were led by Harriet Carey who dropped 16 on 67 per cent shooting, while Lakehead's Sofia Lluch led all scorers with 19 points on 41 per cent shooting.

Arianna Milani and Kaylee Anagnostopoulos led the game in rebounds with 10 each. The Thunderwovles were led by Megan Looney who grabbed seven.

Anagnostopoulos double-doubled in her last regular season home game, pairing her 10 rebounds with 10 points and coming just three assists shy of a triple-double.

GAME FLOW
The blue and gold got things going down low early with a ton of success, forcing the Thunderwolves into an early timeout after the Lancers started on a 4-0 run. Coming out of the timeout the Lancers continued their dominant inside game and blew the quarter open when Carey nailed back-to-back threes, pushing the lead to 20-4. After 10 minutes of play, the Lancers were humming along at 59 per cent from the field and 67 per cent from deep, up 24-6 heading into quarter two. The second quarter was much the same, with the Lancers getting good looks down low stymieing the Lakehead offence. Though the offence cooled down late in the second half but with Lakehead only shooting 25 per cent from the field, the Lancers enjoyed a big lead going into the half, 42-17.

Coming out of the break, the Lancers kept pushing, maintaining a comfortable margin the whole way as the Thunderwolves struggled to find good looks. Carey's threes kept falling and it became apparent Lakehead had no answer for the Lancers. After a buzzer beating triple from Eve Uwayesu, the Lancers led 59-31 after three. With a massive lead in the fourth, the Lancers let their defense slip slightly though Lakehead didn't capitalize and the lead remained the same. With the final minutes ticking off, there wasn't much suspense as the Lancers defended their home court, finishing with a 9-1 home record after a 81-42 win over Lakehead.

QUOTE FROM THE COACH
"I heard Kaylee talking at breakfast a few weeks ago," recalled Head Coach Chantal Vallée when asked about her outgoing senior. "She said, 'you know I remember myself as a 17 year old and right now, walking out as a fifth year, I don't even recognize myself as a woman.' That was probably the nicest compliment I've ever heard. She's a terrific person, she's a transformed young woman and she's going to be a fantastic leader and successful in life."
