Lancer Recreation is proud to announce the winners of the 2019-2020 Intramural season. Although unable to celebrate with the traditional end of year banquet, it is still important to recognize these amazing achievements.
Â
Fall Champions Day was held on Sunday November 24 at Alumni Stadium. The champions were crowned for Ultimate Frisbee, Flag Football, Men's Soccer, and Coed Soccer.
Â
"Down to Flick" took the
Ultimate Frisbee championship for the second year in a row. They showed up every week with tons of energy and a positive attitude, no matter the weather conditions. They fought hard every week until the last game of the season where they had to overcome an injury in the final minutes. They were respectful and kind towards staff and their opponents. Congratulations to
"Down to Flick" on an amazing season!
                                                      Â
In
Flag Football,
"Hooked on a Thielen" showed up ready to compete and play hard in every game which led them to a regular season 3 way tie for first place. Captain MacKenzie Hoekstra led the team through many close playoff games to beat "Second Chance U" in the finals and secure their victory as intramural champions. Their talent and passion for the game was a pleasure to watch all season. Congratulations!
Â
After winning last year,
"The Soppressata's" continued this season where they left off in the
Men's Soccer league. Every week this team came to play with a full, committed roster ready to compete. They showed character on and off the field by the way they played and conducted themselves with their opposition and referees. Their character was put to the test when they were down 1 goal in the finals. They fought back and won the game 3-1. They finished the regular season in first place and continued that momentum into the finals and were clearly the best team all season. Congratulations!
Â
To wrap up the fall semester,
"Notorious E.N.G." had a great
Coed Soccer regular season in which they were neck in neck with other great teams. However, it wasn't until the playoffs where they truly pulled apart from the pack. They breezed through the first couple rounds, and passed their first test in a tough semi-finals matchup. In the finals, they controlled the game throughout and were able to hold their opponents scoreless to win the fall championship. Congratulations on a great season!
Â
Unfortunately the winter champions day was cancelled one week before its scheduled date. Therefore, the winter winners were determined by choosing the team with the best record still left in the playoff race at the time of cancellation.
Â
In the
Coed Basketball league, it was another successful season for the
"Shooters". From the beginning they showed good sportsmanship, respected every opponent on and off the court, and always played with joy. It was a pleasure watching this team play, as every player got involved and every week a different player shined. With an undefeated record this season, there is no question this team deserves the title. Congratulations
"Shooters"!
Â
Men's basketball had three different divisions. For the
rec league, the season for the
"MHK Ballers" went exactly as they expected, clinching first place with a record of 14-4-0 in the regular season. They were able to close out the tight games. Whether it be trailing coming into the second half or locking down on the defensive end, with a point differential of 133, this team was nothing to scoff at on both ends of the court. Congratulations
"MHK Ballers"!
Â
"Space Jam" dominated the
Comp B men's basketball division with a record of 11-6-0 in the regular season, and even proved they could compete in Comp A with a couple of cross-divisional games played this season. With a point difference of 138, it was obvious that this team was strong both offensively and defensively. Congratulations on an impressive year!
Â
Lastly,
"Gunna Squad" finished first place in the
Comp A men's basketball division with an impressive record of 13-4-0 and a point differential of 168 in the regular season. These guys were off to a strong start ever since the first week. Though other teams gave them great competition,
"Gunna Squad" was clutch down the stretch and clinched first seed in the playoffs. Congratulations!
Â
Intramural volleyball was another league with three divisions. In the
rec division, the Lancer Law team had an awesome intramural volleyball season, finishing 13-4 and a top of the Rec League. It was enjoyable watching this team making the sport fun for everyone to play. They always demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and dedication each week. Congrats to our Rec champions,
"Can't Spike Onus", on a tremendous season!
Â
With an impressive 15-1 finish on the season,
"Dat Ace Doe" demonstrated great teamwork and dedication in the
volleyball Comp B division. This team always showed up to every game with a positive attitude, with nothing but respect for athletes, referees, and staff. They always made the game fun to play and consistently showed top performance! Congrats to our Comp B champions,
"Dat Ace Doe"!
Â
Lastly,
"Sweet Digs" was named the winners of
Comp A volleyball. This team had an impressive season with Lancer Rec. Finishing 17-1 on the season, they proved week after week why they are the top team in the league. They not only demonstrated incredible athleticism, but their sportsmanship and respect for the game is what makes them stand out.
"Sweet Digs" earned a great honour being selected to take part in the 1st annual All-Star Game (which sadly got postponed). Congrats to our Comp A champions on a well-deserved season!
Â
Moving over to the ice, in our
Tier 1 Ice Hockey league,
"Windsor Law" dominated with a 13-2 record. Despite having trouble finding a goaltender earlier on in the season, they proved why they are the reigning Tier 1 intramural champions with solid team play all season long. Congratulations
"Windsor Law"!
Â
The
"Windvegas hockey club" dominated
Tier 2 intramural hockey this year. They were very respectful and sportsmanlike throughout the year. Great goaltending and strong defensive play led them to an impressive league best 12-1 regular season record. Congratulations on an impressive season!
Â
In
Futsal,
"Out on Bale" picked up right where they left off from last year's championship run. In
Futsal's inaugural season, no team was a match for them and that trend continued this year. They were the only team with a perfect record in the regular season and they simply dominated their matchups. Other teams best hope this core graduates because they will be tough to beat in years to come. Congratulations
"Out on Bale"!
Â
In the
Dodgeball league, the team of track and field varsity athletes,
"The Richards", were always on time and ready to play. They always followed the rules and made sure everyone on their team got a chance to play. They showed up excited and happy to participate. This team showed sportsmanship as well great teamwork which helped them achieve an undefeated regular season record (6-0). Congratulations!
Â
In the very exciting
Indoor Cricket League, the
"Renegades Indoor XI" showed incredible sportsmanlike spirit both at the team and individual level. They always showed up on time every week and never had to be reminded to follow the rules and regulations. Even in the intense, competitive moments of the game, they never started conflict. All players were dedicated throughout the season to help the team play at a high level on a consistent basis. Congratulations
"Renegades Indoor XI"!
Â
Lastly in the
Spikeball league, "
Macattack" showed up every Friday with a smile on their face. They showed up stronger every week and you could tell they put their all into it, while also treating their opponents and staff with respect. These are some of the qualities that make a positive impact on the league overall. Thank you
"Macattack" for a great season and all best in your future Spikeball tournaments. Congratulations!
Â
2ND ANNUAL BASKETBALL ALL-STAR GAME AGAINST ST. CLAIR COLLEGE
Â
The
Intramural Basketball All-Star team was able to repeat history against St. Clair on a clutch 3-point shot from Patrick Douangchantha and claim the title for the second year in a row. After trailing coming into the second half, the team held St. Clair to 20 second half points to come back and win 79-78. Congratulations to the entire team on an incredible win and for representing the blue and gold so well.
Â
INDIVIDUAL AWARD WINNERS
Â
ROOKIE OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR-
Ajay Krishnan Unikrishnan
Ajay has been dedicated, enthusiastic, and punctual throughout the year. Being a multi-sport official, he showed his professional skills and knowledge to make some difficult officiating decisions during both cricket and futsal matches. He was always prompt and available whenever we needed help and set a great example for other officials. Congratulations Ajay!
Â
OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR-
Cassell Jones
Cassell has been a member of the intramural team for multiple years. Over the last two seasons he's been an exemplar official for intramural basketball. Last year he was a lead official of our Comp A league officiating with superior communication skills to provide players ongoing feedback. His proactive approach to managing conflict has helped ensure the league ran smoothly and he earned the respect of the players. This year he came back and most importantly acted as a leader and mentor to new incoming staff. He would coach them along providing support and feedback after each game. Congratulations Cassell!
Â
SPORT MANAGER OF THE YEAR-
Mitchell Benn and
Brooke Davis
It was impossible to pick just one Sport Manager of the Year award winner, as Brooke and Mitchell were both phenomenal managers throughout the year. Both of these leagues have 3 tiers which makes it a difficult task to organize. Mitchell was the Sport Manager for Men's Basketball and immediately stepped up in this role. He also helped manage the basketball all-star game event with St. Clair College. The positive energy Mitchell brought each week was contagious. Even though Brooke was a first year sport manager, you would never know with the knowledge she has shown. Managing a total of 43 teams every single week in the volleyball league, Brooke made sure everything ran smoothly and did it with a smile on her face.
Congratulations to you both!
Â
MALE PARTICIPANT OF THE YEAR-
Ali Tejani
Ali was the President of the Windsor Law Athletics Society this year. Not only did he participate in many sports himself, he helped his fellow Law students get involved as well. He helped his teams succeed on the court, but he also made sure that every Windsor Law team was staying safe, following the rules, and having fun. Congratulations Ali on a very well deserved accolade!
Â
FEMALE PARTICIPANT OF THE YEAR- Michelle
Louwagie
Michelle has been a committed and enthusiastic intramural participant all year long. She was the captain of the ultimate frisbee champions Down to Flick and was named the player of the game in the championship game, and was also the captain of Unprotected Sets in comp A volleyball. She was always a tough competitor on the field and court while also showing great sportsmanship with a smile on her face. Congratulations Michelle!
Â
MOST SPORTSMANLIKE TEAM-
Schulich Frisbee
This award goes to the team who gave out the most high fives and provided each other with an overwhelming amount of support all season long. Whether it was on the grass fields or trudging through snow at Alumni Stadium, Schulich Frisbee always came out with a smile and team spirit. In good old Canadian fashion, 'sorry' was not uncommon as they played but the team maintained great moral. Not just another Schulich team, this particular Schulich team supported each other and was always out to have fun. They truly embodied the spirit of intramurals. Congratulations Schulich Frisbee!
Â
Congratulations to all of the 2019-2020 award winners! Have a safe and restful summer. We look forward to another great season next year.
