Lancer Football defeats No. 5 ranked Guelph in home opener

The Lancer football team's return to Alumni Stadium after a two year hiatus was one for the memory books as the blue and gold took down the No. 5 ranked Guelph Gryphons 14-12.

The win sets the Lancers record to 1-1 as they head into week four next Saturday against the McMaster Marauders.

STATS
Sam Richardson came up big for the Lancers today, converting 2 out of 3 field-goal attempts and putting up seven points. Running back David Adeniran led the Lancers on the ground with 130 yards on 26 carries, while Callin Bethune caught for 45 yards. Quarterback Sam Girard went 14-for-25 for 140 yards and a touchdown.

Andrew Beatty and Liam Hoskins led the Lancer defense in tackles with 6.5 each, while Devin Vereksuk and Breton MacDougall each had an interception.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers started off the game strong with a big run up the middle by David Adeniran. This ability to break off big plays would continue for Adeniran throughout the game.

The Windsor offense had some great opportunities to put points up on the board, particularly in the first quarter, and gave themselves their first lead of the game at 7:17 when Richardson hit a 32-yard field goal.

The Lancer defense created trouble for the Gryphons by getting to the quarterback quickly and making two interceptions in the first half. The Gryphons added two field goals of their own in the second, but the blue and gold would go into halftime up by one after a rouge and another 32-yard field goal by Richardson.

Once again, the Lancer defense was the equivalent of a brick wall as they stopped Guelph from doing anything to start the second half. This dominating display would continue throughout the remainder of the game. A great catch over the middle by Callin Bethune would set up the Lancers in prime territory to put points on the board. Sam Girard capitalized on the location, hitting Alex Bornais with a 23-yard pass for his first touchdown of the season. Heading into the final quarter, Windsor led 14-6.

The Gryphons would go on to convert on two more field goals in the fourth quarter to bring the game within two at 14-12, but some  phenomenal clock management by the Lancers in the final minutes of the game clinched the victory.
