Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Windsor shuts out first place Hawks

The Lancer women's soccer team earned a very important win Friday night with a 2-0 shutout of the first place Laurier Golden Hawks.

The win moves the Lancers to 2-3-2 in the OUA west division standings, while the Golden Hawks suffered their first loss of the season and now hold a 4-1-2 record.

STATS
First year Lancers Brooke MacLeod and Ella Greco earned their first goals of their OUA careers. Alexa Mognon and Aislynn Essibrah spread the ball around today as both recorded the assists that led to the two epic Lancer goals.  Windsor had 11 shots on goal compared to the Golden Hawks' three. Kailyn Roberston tallied a total of 4 shots, which led the Lancers in today's game.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers started today's game off quickly after a beautiful through ball set up MacLeod in perfect position for an early strike. After taking a 1-0 just 2 minutes into the game, the Lancers continued to apply pressure throughout the first half of play. Emma Beaulieu and Robertson seemed to be taking turns at goal, as the chances just kept on coming. Megan Bornais had a pair of blocked shots and a few great tackles that helped the Lancer backline stay firm.

In the 30th minute of play, veteran goalkeeper Lauren Gellner made one of the best saves of the season to keep the blue and gold ahead. To cap off half of electrifying action Beaulieu had a stunning chance on net that flew just wide left.

The Lancers came out swinging in the second half after a through ball led to another great opportunity for Roberston that was saved, but nearly cleaned up by Mognon. Jade Samping picked up on her first-half performance by continuing to control the pace of play in the midfield.

The Golden Hawks brought a considerable amount of pressure midway through the second half, but great defensive play by Nicole Hogeterp and Kat Campana kept Laurier's chances at bay. Essibrah responded to Laurier's spurring attack with one of her own in what was a huge scare and save for the Golden Hawks in the 66th minute of play. A beautiful through ball by Mognon to MacLeod surely gave the Golden Hawks some deja vu, however, this time around Laurier was able to get a hand on the ball before MacLeod could record another goal. In the dying minutes of the game, Ella Greco was able to record the first goal of her Lancer career after a phenomenal corner kick by Mognon.
